This paper argues that the negation operator is uniformly truth-functional in its descriptive and metalinguistic uses. The analysis is supported by research on Korean, a language unrelated to English, in which sentence negation can take two distinct linguistic forms, one of which appears to favour a metalinguistic interpretation.
