Annotation
This paper examines the presentation of and response to the face threatening acts of criticism, suggestion and request, in tutor-student interaction in British and Japanese academic contexts. Results reveal an obvious attendance to negative face in the British context, whereas there was an effacement of negative face in the Japanese context. Attempts are made to show the wider applicability of 'face', beyond the specific field of politeness, in contrastive and cross-cultural pragmatics.
