Annotation

This paper argues that the problems faced by Japanese speakers of English as a second language, in accomplishing linguistic politeness in English, are caused by the nature of the role-relationships that define the Japanese conception of family, given that role-relationships are defined primarily in terms of power and social distance differentials.
