Annotation

This paper proposes an alternative model for the analysis of demonstrative reference in spontaneous oral discourse. This model, which intends to replace the traditional proximal/distal distinction, centers on interaction between and among participants. It will be demonstrated that a speakers' choice of demonstratives is closely linked to the concept of focus, and that it points to his personal stance with regard to both his interlocutors and the referents being talked about.
