This contribution to the debate on the relative weight of internal and external factors in language change, critically examines Lass' claims that downplay the impact of contact on linguistic features and demonstrates that the double position that core structural features always have priority and that inherited features remain unaltered, doesn't always hold. Examples deal with word order changes in both Old English and Old Irish.
