Annotation

The paper investigates English and German tendencies with regard to gender-specific or gender-non-specific noun designations and their historical development. English, which lost its original Germanic feminizing suffixes, prefers neutralized forms, whilst German favours "feminization" as the -in suffix preserved its productivity; it has even become an important instrument in the struggle for political correctness.
