This article examines Lass and Wrigh's conclusions on the structure of busy in South African English as an endogenous development, in the light of additional data since 1986, and the rise of corpus linguistics. It argues that their views are essentially correct, but proposes two important modifications, related to how South African the construction is in the first place and whether any appeal to Afrikaans pragmatics is necessary.
