This paper uses the framework of adverb functions proposed by Quirk et al (1985) to discuss the adverbialization processes of two roughly synonymous present-day English intensifiers, pretty and fairly. The findings that, despite some of their shared meanings, the two intensifiers underwent different adverbialization processes are set against a broader grammaticalization framework.
