This chapter presents a historical overview of critical discourse analysis, situating it in the lineage of attempts to develop a normative political linguistics, starting with Voloshinov. It then discusses recent approaches and procedures that attempt to link text analysis with contemporary social, political, and cultural theory and points to new challenges, created by the conditions of economic and cultural globalization.
