Annotation

This chapter reviews recent theoretical and empirical literature on the frequency, the when, and the why of teachers' uses of the target and first languages in second and foreign language classrooms, and on teachers' and learner's beliefs and attitudes towards the phenomenon. Several related issues are explored theoretically, such as student motivation, cognitive considerations, exposure to target language input, code-switching, and appropriate first language use by the teacher.
