Annotation

This study explores whether letter names in Hebrew have a similar function as in English, that is bridging the gap between spoken and written language. Hebrew letter names differ from English in that they are longer and more irregular phonologically. Drawing on data from Israeli kindergartners and first graders, it is demonstrated that reliance on letter names both facilitated and impaired performance with regard to letter saying, spelling and word recognition, but in different ways than in English.
