Annotation

This article uses multivariate analysis to investigate variation in the form of American Sign Language (ASL) signs, produced with 1 handshape, including signs of nearly all grammatical classes. It is found that various linguistic and social factors condition these forms, with grammatical function as the major linguistic constraint on the use of two of the three main variants. The fact that signers in all regions of the United States demonstrate similar patterns of variation, presents evidence of their membership of a single “speech” community.
