This article establishes an underlying iambic structure for the Old French octosyllable via quantitative analysis of a large corpus of texts written between 975 and 1180. It is argued that during the 12th century, Old French authors' grammar of meter underwent a gradual change, comparable to more familiar phonological and syntactic changes.
