Annotation
This study examines the effect of the social variables of age, sex, and formality on hedges in Japanese conversation, defined here as expressions of uncertainty, possibility, or tentativeness. The findings confirm the hypotheses that hedges are used more often by younger speakers and by women. They do not however occur more often in casual speech than in formal speech. Social speaker factors and context are shown to play an important role in the use of hedges in Japanese discourse.
