Annotation
This article examines whether the dialectally complex city of St. Louis' (Missouri) affinity for the Northern/North Midland dialect continues into the 21st century. Whilst small pieces of evidence indicated both a shift toward and away from a Northern/North Midland standard, more comprehensive results from a dialectological/sociolinguistic survey, concluded in 1982–1983 and replicated in 2001, suggest that overall the Northern/North Midland standard has been greatly strengthened.
