This study explores whether the nongeneric uses of the English definite article, including cultural, situational, structural, and textual categories, present different difficulty levels for English second language students and whether they are acquired simultaneously. It is demonstrated that the four nongeneric uses constitute different levels of difficulty and that the suppliance of the in obligatory contexts significantly improves with proficiency level for all four uses.
