This study examines Japanese adult learners' acquisition of the locality condition on English reflexives. It is demonstrated that this condition is acquired significantly better, throughout the different stages of learning, with sentences containing embedded that-clauses than with sentences containing embedded infinitival clauses. It is argued that previous Universal Grammar models cannot account for the percentage of advanced learners failing to acquire the locality condition in the latter case.
