This paper reports on a study of psychological factors affecting access to metalinguistic knowledge, in the second language production of adult Chinese learners of English. It was assumed that three interacting factors would largely define real-time access to metalinguistic knowledge: linguistic prototypicality, attention to form, and processing automaticity. The findings suggest that there are major psychological constraints on the utility of metalinguistic knowledge in second language production.
