This article compares the communication strategies of two generations of French scientists in the writing of research articles for specialized anglophone journals, focusing on those strategies that relate to two fundamentally different attitudes towards foreign language acquisition: using the language as a tool to meet specific task requirements only, or trying to improve one's overall performance in the use of the language.
