Annotation

Analyses of spontaneous child and parental speech show that NP-type nouns are represented as noun phrases and that children learn this category as, or before, they acquire the count/mass distinction. The article discusses implications for theories of the count/mass distinction and addresses additional questions concerning learnability and historical change.
