This study investigates the metadiscourse in persuasive essays composed by English as a second language university students. The essays rated as good had a greater variety of metadiscourse features within each category than those rated as poor. It is suggested that skilled writers are aware of their readers' needs and control the techniques for making their texts more considerate and accessible.
