Annotation

This paper argues that freshman textbook presentations of the concepts central to writing instruction in the United States, i.e. voice and audience, disadvantage second language student writers, as they are predicated on a set of assumptions that draw heavily on shared cultural knowledge. The paper thus proposes a discipline-oriented approach to freshman composition to facilitate nonnative speakers' grasp of these concepts.
