This study presents a way of deriving the interpretation of rhetorical questions and argues that the representation over which various well-formedness conditions are stated is the output of a post-LF derivation which is defined through interaction with a sub-part of the interpretational component, namely pragmatics. It demonstrates that a compositional semantics for rhetorical questions can be obtained via direct mapping of this post-LF representation onto the semantic interpretation.
