Annotation
This paper considers sign language in the context of the modularity thesis of Fodor (1983), a particular theory of cognitive organization and in the light of a stimulus-domain specific and informationally encapsulated language module. It is demonstrated that sign language constitutes a challenge for the development of a comprehensive language theory, which, it is argued, should predict both similarities and differences between natural languages in the two modalities.
