Annotation

Evidence from infants, toddlers, and preschool children learning English, French, or Spanish as their first language, reveal the existence of specific linkages between linguistic and conceptual development. Infants appear to start word learning with an expectation that words refer to objects and object categories. This initial linkage leads to more specific linkages between specific linguistic forms and particular types of meaning, which may depend upon language experience.
