This paper presents a general hypothesis which, together with concepts called public and private self, can provide a unified account of complicated syntactic and semantic characteristics of direct and indirect speech in Japanese. Direct and indirect speech are considered as quotations of respectively public and private expressions which designate two different levels of linguistic expression, corresponding to two different functions of language.
