This study examines the identification of speech acts of utterances. The findings demonstrate that response times are the same for sentences with one plausible meaning (direct or indirect) or with both direct and indirect meanings. This is regarded as evidence for a speech act processing model in which a single plausible interpretation is derived for each sentence, whether it is direct or indirect.
