This study examines and compares performance determinants in word translation by unbalanced bilinguals. Both forward and backward word translation appeared to be influenced by meaning and familiarity variables, and by cognate status. Of particular relevance is the finding that meaning influences backward translation, because it suggests a qualification of the asymmetry word translation model, proposed by Kroll and Stewart (1994).
