This article discusses Japanese speakers' use of the expression "I'm sorry" in a conversation with English speakers, compares Japanese and English speakers' cultural knowledge concerning the use of the phrase and demonstrates that, due to discrepancies in central assumption and culturally salient meaning, English speakers might consider the Japanese use of "'I'm sorry" as insincere.
