This paper examines patients' extended responses to doctors' diagnostic statements in Finnish primary care. It is found that the type of the patient's response is strongly associated with the doctor's reference to the evidence for the diagnosis and that in all types of extended responses, the patients show an orientation to the doctors' ultimate authority in the field of medical reasoning.
