Theoretical frameworks for 'gambits' and 'repairs' are presented, and their interrelationships are discussed; hypotheses about repair work in interactions between native speakers and learners at different proficiency levels are formulated; and it is argued that the discourse-analytical approach should be broadened to include a psycholinguistic dimension.
