The interactional definition of communication strategies (saying that the central function of these strategies is the negotiation of meaning) and their psycholinguistic definition (according to which these strategies are related to individual language users' experience of communicative problems and the solutions they pursue) are compared, and it is argued that the former is included in the latter.
