This article concentrates on the conceptual weaknesses in recent attempts to construct computer-generated analyses of discourse, examining in particular the work of Hak and Torode in this area and the influence of Pêcheux. It proposes that discourse analysis must be directed towards textual structure rather than particular instances of realized text, and that it must recognize its own interpretive basis.
