Annotation

The author's interviews with a boss and his secretaries are read through Irigaray's argument that the cultural order is one in which homosexuality is masked by a heterosexual economy of exchanges of women by men. It is demonstrated that the boss's rationality depends upon the ways in which his secretary both mediates and disguises his affective relations with other bosses. However, her own discourse occupies a different discursive space from the official rationale of the boss. The analysis also raises the question of the analyst/interviewer's own subject position. Moreover, it criticizes sociological discourse approaches based on the concept of 'experience' and its supposed authenticity.
