F. and F. present evidence to support the thesis that some features of meaning are uniquely communicative, i.e. that there are aspects of meaning for some fragments of discourse that can only be uncovered by considering their functions as instances of communication. They also suggest some implications for philosophy, aesthetics, and the social sciences.
