Annotation

This article depicts the Italian Marxist politician Antonio Gramsci as a linguist and a language philosopher. It is argued that his methodology implies the inclusion of knowledge in the pursuit of social unity, which leads to a dissolution of the difficult distinction between objective and subjective meaning, comparable to language concepts developed by Saussure and Wittgenstein, yet more explicitly politicized. Special attention is paid to Gramsci's argument that, starting from difference, one should always strive for unity (his 'coherence' principle).
