Annotation

This paper proposes a context-based approach to linguistic variability, that examines the meanings of linguistic variants of socially disadvantaged speakers from the point of view of their own needs. As a demonstration of the need to develop alternative ways of investigating linguistic variability, it offers an analysis of YOU KNOW/I THINK variation in the discourse of some American industrial workers, focusing on meaning and context.
