This paper examines defendants' interpretation of of judges' and prosecutors' positive politeness strategies in petty crime trials. It is demonstrated that for defendants with an earlier criminal record or earlier contact with social institutions, these positive politeness strategies are counter-effective; thus social distance is not negotiable in a rigid situation.
