Annotation

This paper examines how children come to understand the three dimensions that control the use of politeness forms -social distance, power, and degree of imposition-, by analyzing the frequency and the conditions of use of standard politeness forms in parent-child interactions in 110 families. It is shown that children obtain ample information (though seldom direct instruction) about the use of both positive and negative politeness strategies, from their interactions with their parents.
