Annotation

F. shows that standard 'polarity items' (i.e. words or phrases the occurrence of which is restricted by the affirmative or negative nature of the sentences in which they occur) form only a subgroup of a larger set of similar phenomena. Examples are logically polarized superlatives and contextually polarized 'even'- phrases. To explain these phenomena, the 'scale principle' is introduced.
