This article presents some pragmatically relevant verbal, vocal, and kinesic emotive contrasts in American English, such as shifts of verbal explicitness, verbal intensity, vocal emphasis, intonation, gaze, facial expression, body posture, and comments on their speech functions as signals of (un)assertiveness, (non)affiliation, and (un)involvement.
