This article deals with word order variation and pragmatic function assignment in declarative main clauses in English within the framework of Functional Grammar, focusing on variation in the first constituent of the clause. The presented mechanism enables to incorporate ideas regarding the speaker's communicative strategies more solidly into the grammar.
