This paper examines the pragmatic functions of diminutives in English and in Greek. It is demonstrated that, at least in Greek, these linguistic elements serve as markers of friendly, informal politeness, establishing or reaffirming a solidary interaction framework. It is argued that the observed differences reveal different cultural norms and values.
