This article reviews some current approaches to the study of Western and non-Western linguistic politeness; demonstrates how Brown and Levinson's notion of face differs from the Nigeria Igbo conceptualization, with its dual manifestation of 'group' and 'individual' face; and discusses how Igbo society regards differently many activities conceived of as impositions in Western societies.
