This paper examines how the respondents' gender influences interviewers' politeness and discourse management strategies in same- and cross-sex opinion-poll surveys. It is demonstrated that whilst female respondents elicit more sympathy and understanding, male respondents elicit more attention to their needs and are managed more in almost every way. Even anonymous, information-oriented discourse is shown to be crucially interactional.
