This article deals with conventionalized expressions such as '-d'you-call-it', with meanings explicitly oriented towards the interactional nature of the speech context, capable of explaining functional contrast among similar expressions, in a single language and cross-linguistically. It compares the English expressions '-d'you-call-it' and 'you-know-', along with an expression in Lao which roughly means 'that thing'.
