This study of gender variation in politeness investigates the relationship between situation and language use. Male speakers' use of politeness markers is shown to be roughly equal to that of women in data drawn from voice mail messages in a legal setting. Factors which may contribute to account for these findings cover the one-sided nature of voice mail communications and the legal setting.
