This paper deals with the uses of context in knowledge representation and reasoning. It is argued that partition of context theories into 'divide-and-conquer' and 'compose-and-conquer' classes might explain why context is used to solve different kinds of problems -such as generality, the formalization of propositional attitudes, and knowledge and data integration-, or to address them from different perspectives.
