Annotation

Using Sperber and Wilson's (1986) relevance theory, this article claims that newspaper headlines intend to optimize the story relevance for their readers. It is argued that the construction of successful headlines requires an understanding of the story and of the readers's state-of-knowledge, beliefs, expectations, and cognitive styles.
