Annotation
This paper examines how culture can function as an explanatory variable in cross-cultural pragmatic research. It proposes to reconceptualize the notion of pragmatic maxims as sociopragmatic interactional principles (SIPs), pointing to the sociopragmatic-pragmalinguistic distinction and other cross-cultural pragmatic approaches . SIPs are then discussed in relation to Brown and Levinson's view on the impact of culture on language use.
